My Maiden Speech

Speaker's Trust x SEC Newgate UK

Many young people, particularly from underprivileged backgrounds, lack access to public speaking training, limiting their ability to confidently express their views. SEC Newgate UK partnered with Speakers Trust to launch My Maiden Speech, a public speaking competition designed to empower students, enhance their communication skills, and introduce them to Westminster politics.

This initiative provided state-educated sixth formers in the West Midlands with a unique platform to develop their oracy skills. After two public speaking workshops, seven outstanding students were selected to deliver their own maiden speech—the first speech given by newly elected MPs—in the Houses of Parliament. The competition secured MPs Zarah Sultana, Taiwo Owatemi, and Preet Kaur Gill as mentors, who guided students and provided valuable feedback. By engaging politicians, business leaders, and media professionals, the campaign bridged the gap between young people and decision-makers, encouraging greater participation in public discourse. SEC Newgate UK provided pro bono public affairs support, while Cadent Gas contributed £6,000 to fund the event venue and catering. Beyond the competition, the initiative successfully increased visibility for Speakers Trust, strengthened political engagement among young people, and amplified the importance of oracy training. Feedback from students and teachers highlighted a significant boost in confidence and interest in further political engagement. The success of My Maiden Speech has laid the groundwork for future initiatives to champion communication skills, social mobility, and youth participation in democracy—helping to shape the next generation of leaders.
