Childhood Can't Wait

Whizz Kidz and Red Consultancy

When demand for specialist wheelchairs surged beyond fundraising capacity, Whizz Kidz, the UK’s leading charity for young wheelchair users, faced an unprecedented crisis. More than 1,000 children across the UK were left waiting 18 months + for essential equipment – missing school, friendships and everyday independence while living with pain and restriction. So Whizz Kidz made the difficult and reputationally risky decision to close its waiting list for the first time in its 35-year history

This act of transparency became the foundation of Childhood Can’t Wait – an emergency fundraising campaign designed to turn a systems failure into a national call-to-action. Because when a child waits 18 months for a wheelchair, they don’t just wait – they miss 18 months of childhood. In partnership with Red Consultancy, the integrated PR and fundraising campaign delivered 60+ broadcast interviews and editorial features including a major editorial partnership with the Daily Express, backed with targeted digital fundraising to convert awareness into immediate donations. PR launch day saw a 23-fold spike in website traffic and online donations equalling the total the charity had received over the prior eight months. To date, almost £550,000 has been raised in three months: 80% of the £750,000 required to open the waiting list. With the opening of the waitlist now firmly in reach, Childhood Can’t Wait demonstrates how bold transparency, credible journalism and emotionally powerful storytelling can turn urgency into action, and importantly, restore hope for children and families across the UK who cannot afford to wait
